Ukraine's least successful result had been 24th place, which they achieved, as hosts, in 2017, with the song " Time" performed by O.Torvald. Ukraine had been the runner-up in the contest on two occasions: in 2007 with the song " Dancing Lasha Tumbai" performed by Verka Serduchka and in 2008 with the song " Shady Lady" performed by Ani Lorak.
Following the introduction of semi-finals for the 2004, Ukraine had managed to qualify to final in every contest they participated in thus far.
Prior to the 2021 contest, Ukraine had participated in the Eurovision Song Contest fifteen times since its first entry in 2003, winning it in 2004 with the song " Wild Dances" performed by Ruslana. Main article: Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest In the final, Ukraine performed in position 19 and placed fifth out of the 26 participating countries with 364 points. It was later revealed that Ukraine placed second out of the 16 participating countries in the semi-final with 267 points. Performing during the show in position 15, " Shum" was announced among the top 10 entries of the first semi-final and therefore qualified to compete in the final on 22 May. Ukraine was drawn to compete in the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest which took place on. The song " Shum" was selected as the Ukrainian entry on 1 February 2021 and announced on 4 February 2021. The song was performed by the band Go_A, which were announced by the Ukrainian broadcaster Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine (UA:PBC) as the Ukrainian representative for the 2021 contest on 18 March 2020 after they were due to compete in the 2020 contest with " Solovey" before the event's cancellation. According to the rules of the competition, Go_A would have to create a new song for the 2021 competition, which they did with " Shum.Ukraine participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the song " Shum" written by Kateryna Pavlenko, Taras Shevchenko and Ihor Didenchuk. Tentatively, the national broadcasters have stated that no further national selection will take place in Ukraine next year and Go_A will be allowed to return as the Ukrainian entry for Eurovision 2021. It was announced on Mathat, due to the 2020 pandemic of Coronavirus, the Eurovision Song Contest for 2020 would not go ahead.
Ukraine was placed into the first semi-final, to be held on, and was scheduled to perform in the second half of the show. On 28 January 2020, a special allocation draw was held which placed each country into one of the two semi-finals, as well as which half of the show they would perform in. The song was selected to represent Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, after Go_A was chosen through Vidbir, the music competition that selects Ukraine's entries for the Eurovision Song Contest.
